and negative self image
It is
important to recognize that warning signs of depression are
different for girls than for boys.
Conventional
wisdom says that girls are more at risk for depression than
boys,
however depressed boys are a higher risk for suicide than
girls particularly if they have a conduct disorder and abuse
drugs or alcohol. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of adolescent
death behind accidents and homicide.
What parents can do:
1. Don’t
discount adolescents problems. Learn to listen before giving
standard advice. Let them know you care. Don’t ever
discount threats of suicide or running away. This is a cry
for help.
2. Be particularly observant of any Symptoms which lasts 2
weeks or more.
3. Educate yourself as much as you can about signs of clinical
depression.
4. Seek professional help promptly if your adolescent shows
signs of depression.
5. Remove all possible threats to suicide such as firearms
or potentially lethal medication if your teen is showing symptoms
of depression.
