This one decision will determine the degree of your happiness or misery. Is this person marriage material?

What you should know before you marry:

1. Common goals and values
Do you have common goals and values?
“Like attracts Like” - We are more likely to stay in a relationship with those who are most like ourselves. Your core values and beliefs will determine how you plan to live your life and the lifestyle you embrace. Do you want to have children? What is your work ethic? What are your spiritual and moral beliefs?

2. Trust
Can you trust this person? A person’s behavior over time reveals the trustworthiness of the person. Their past behavior will predict their future behavior. Don’t overlook or make excuses for bad or problematic behavior. You will only get more of the same. You will have to be able to count on the person you marry to be there for you during the tough times.

3. Respect
Do you respect this person?
Are they competent and responsible? Can you say you are proud of them?

4. Your Self Worth
How do you feel about yourself when you are with them?

Do you feel important, respected, loved and cared for? Some people build up your self- esteem.

Or do you feel inferior, stupid, unworthy, ashamed, scared, frustrated or drained? Some people suck the life out of you and leave you feeling empty.

5. Opinions of Others
What is the opinion your family and friends have of this person?
Family and friends have a more objective opinion and will see things you may overlook or discount.
